Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association celebrated a year of success at its latest meeting.
The association was founded in February to celebrate sporting success and support improved facilities for fitness, leisure, sport and well being in Hethersett, Great Melton and Little Melton. The latest meeting heard of a hectic year for clubs and individuals with Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club gaining the national Clubmark award and Hethersett Olympic Weekend proving another massive success with three days of events including a well supported village fun run and a sport in the park event which had featured over 20 come and try events.
Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club had hosted British Championships on the Memorial Playing Field, an Open Spaces Group had been launched to look into the best use of green spaces in Hethersett, new play equipment had been put in place on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field, Hethersett had won the South Norfolk Village Games and finished second in the Norfolk County Village Games and the Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club and Great Melton Cricket Club had both gained promotion.
The meeting heard that 2012 promises to be an even busier year following on from Hethersett’s triumph in being named Norfolk Sports Village of the Year and Norfolk Sports Champion of Champions in the competition organised jointly by the Eastern Daily Press Newspaper and Active Norfolk.
January will see a special pledge pod visiting Woodside Nursery and Infants School to allow local people to pledge towards fitness in 2012. March will see the inaugural Hethersett 30/60 cycling event starting and finishing in the village. The end of May will see a come and try it sports event on the Memorial Field, featuring a number of activities. Next year’s Open Weekend will take place from June 22nd to 24th and will again feature a village fun run, major ladies five a side football tournament, a swimming marathon and a come and try event featuring even more sports. The year will also see international cycle speedway matches in Hethersett between Great Britain and Poland.
July will see the official London 2012 Olympic Torch making a special off route visit to the village to mark Hethersett’s outstanding achievements in support of the Games over the past two years. This follows on from the visit this year of the 1948 London Olympic Torch.
Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association is looking for new members and welcomes anybody, either individual or club, interested in sport, fitness, well being and improving the environment. The next meeting will take place in February. More information is available from association chairman Peter Steward on 01603 811052.

New Social Running Group
A new social running group for beginners is being set-up by Active Norfolk in conjunction with Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association.
Norfolk Olympiad and Active Norfolk Sports Project Officer Paul Evans launched the idea at the latest meeting of the sports association which has been in existence for exactly a year.
The new group will be aimed at social running, jogging or even walking and Paul Evans will be on hand to oversee an initial six week course.
“One of the main aims of Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association is to improve the fitness and well being of local people by giving them increased opportunities to take part in exercise. We are delighted to be able to join together with Active Norfolk to start a new group where the onus will be on friendship and well being,” said association chairman Peter Steward.
Paul Evans told the meeting that the new group would have funding and backing from Run England which is aiming to sign up 1200 new runners in Norfolk and Suffolk.
“We are very aware of how pro-active Hethersett is in the fields of sport and health and we are looking for people who want to improve their fitness by jogging, running or even walking. It is often easier for people to run with others where they can all help each other along. We will also be giving advice on what to wear and how to warm up properly,” Paul Evans said.
It is likely that the new group will meet for the first time in April although exact dates, times and venues still have to be finalised. Those taking part have to be over 16 although youngsters aged between 14 and 16 can take part if accompanied by an adult.
Further information on the new group is available from either Paul Evans on 01603 731567 [email protected] or Peter Steward on 01603 811052 [email protected]
The sports association agreed to once again oversee an entry in this year’s South Norfolk Village Games, a competition Hethersett won last year before coming second in the large villages and market towns section of the county finals. This year’s South Norfolk event will take place at Framingham Earl Sports Centre on June 10th.
The meeting also heard about a hectic year of sport and fitness events lined up in Hethersett including the annual open weekend from June 22nd to 24th which will include the very popular run the square two mile fun run, a 24 hour swimming marathon, a Saturday sport in the park event featuring over 20 Olympic themed sports and a major ladies five-a-side competition on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. The village will also receive a unique visit from the official London Olympic flame on July 4th. Other events include a come and try community sports evening on May 30th, a 30/60 mile bike event on March 18th and an old style village jubilee fayre featuring a number of traditional games on the Memorial Field on June 3rd. Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club will also be hosting test matches between Great Britain and Poland at the end of July.

A number of new sports and leisure clubs could soon be springing up in South Norfolk following the latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
It was agreed to put together a grant bid for new clubs and equipment for existing clubs with the aim of launching petanque, rounders and tennis clubs in the villages next Spring.
The association is also looking into the possibility of starting up a number of minor sports such as goalball, handball and volleyball.
“We have a wonderful opportunity in our three villages of marking Olympic year with a true legacy by starting up new clubs and supporting existing ones. A number of village groups will be working together to look at the whole question of fitness and well being and encourage more people to take part in regular exercise,” said association chairman Peter Steward.
Plans could also see another beginners’ running club being started in the Spring to function alongside the existing social running club started by the association this year in partnership with Active Norfolk.
“As well as introducing new clubs we will be looking to provide fun facilities such as cement table tennis tables and basketball hoops at various venues. These are exciting times for fitness in our villages,” Peter Steward said, adding that grants would also be sought to extend and improve the existing pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field,
