Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association 2015
January - Good Media coverage of a £1,300 grant for Hethersett Junior Netball Club. The club is under the auspices of the sports association and the grant was obtained through a partnership between Hethersett Junior Netball Club, Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association and South Norfolk Council. The junior netball club is attracting over 23 youngsters each week for training sessions at Hethersett old Hall School. The age range of those taking part is from nine to 16.
February 2nd - The association held its annual meeting at Park Farm Hotel with Peter Steward elected chairman and secretary, Peter Hoult elected vice-chairman and Shane Hull elected Treasurer. Fourteen members were present and the evening covered a large amount of business. The association has a balance of £1345.85 to distribute amongst its membership.
Hethersett Open Weekend will take place from July 4th to 5th with the funrun on the Sunday and the Come and Try sports event on the Saturday. Hethersett will also be taking part in the Norfolk Village Games, the finals of which will take place at UEA Sportspark in July.
The meeting received a full report on the exciting proposals for a million pounds plus indoor and outdoor sports facility on Hethersett Academy land. This will include new changing facilities, an indoor sports hall and a Multi Use Games Arena (MUGA).
The 2015 Hethersett 30/60/90 event organised by Hethersett Velo Club will take place on Easter Sunday (April 5th). Hethersett Netball Club will be taking part in the annual Active Norfolk competition in Dereham in April. Hethersett Running Group will start up again in April on Thursday evenings and the Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club will also start its season in April.
Hethersett Hawks has two nationally recognised events coming up with a women's and girls league event at the end of May and a British Youth and Junior event in July.
2015 will see two new groups being set-up aimed at imrpoving well being. These are a dementia cafe which will opne its doors for the first time in May and a Heart of Hethersett Bereavement Support Group which it is hoped to launch in the Spring.
Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club will be holding a charity cricket match on April 12th in aid of the Wymondham based cancer charity StarThrowers and it is hoped to start a tennis club in the summer. Clubs that woukd welcome additional members include Hethersett Methodist Table Tennis Club, Hethersett Queen's Road Badminton Club, Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club, Hethersett Croquet Club and Hethersett Running Group.
March 2015 - It is announced that the penultimate stage of the 2015 Tour of Britain cycle race will pass through Hethersett on Saturday, September 12th as part of the stage from Fakenham to Ipswich. The exciting news will be discussed at the April meeting of Hethersett Parish Council and the May meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
It is also announced that a new six week running course led by Norfolk Olympiad Paul Evans will start on May 28th and run on Thursday evenings in the lead up to the annual village two mile funrun on July 5th.
Over 400 cyclists of all ages and abilities took part in the annual Hethersett Velo Club 30/60/90 event, starting and finishing at Hethersett Social Club. The hugely successful event featured three different rides around South Norfolk from 30 to 90 miles.
April 12th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club raised over £1,000 from a special charity match in aid of the Wymondham based Star Throwers Charity. The game saw Hethersett beat a Tony Selby Norfolk Select XI by 28 runs in a 40 over match where the charity was the real winner
April 26th - Hethersett netball Team win the Active Norfolk competition in Dereham after a Titanic final against Great Massingham which was won on the golden goal rule after two periods of extra-time failed to separate the teams.
May 13th - The latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association took place at Park Farm Hotel and included a lengthy discussion on the future of the skateboard park. Minutes of the meeting are available on this site.
July 4th/5th - Hethersett's sixth annual Open Weekend is held with a come and try sports day on the Memorial Field on Saturday 4th and over 200 people taking part in the two mile run the square funrun on Sunday 5th during heavy rain. Sunday also saw an interdenominational church service in Hethersett Social Club.
July 12th - Hethersett is placed fourth in the county finals of the Norfolk Village Games - a disappointing result after winning the county title in 2014.
July 25th - Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway hosts a national round of the British Youth League with over 100 young riders taking part
September 6th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club win the Norfolk Association of Cricket Officials Shiled by beating Thetford by 102 runs in the final at Halvergate.
September 12th - The Tour of Britain Cycle Race goes through Hethersett and Great Melton as part of the penultimate stage of the race. Top international riders hurtle along Queen's Road and Great Melton Road with hunderds of residents cheering them on.
September 13th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club make it two trophies in twop weeks by beating Downham Town by five wickets to win the Bernard Matthews Cup for the first time in the club's history.
