2013 Sports Association Diary
The diary below logs the success of the sports association during 2013 in supporting its members and member clubs:
January 11th - The first come and try table tennis session was held in Hethersett Methodist Church Hall. It is hoped that this will be the first of a number of table tennis sessions at the venue during 2013.
January - Hethersett Athletic Football Club has been awarded a grant of £3,700 by South Norfolk Council for equipment. Their application was supported by the Sports Association. The money will help provide new goalposts on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field, improved first aid facilities and many other items aimed at enhancing the club's youth and adult teams.
January - Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club has been awarded £590 by South Norfolk Council. This will be added to a grant of £200 from Sainsbury's and will allow the club to buy its own PA system for club, regional and national events on its track at the Memorial Playing Field. The grant application was submitted jointly by the club and the sports association. The new equipment will also be available for public events and for free hire by member clubs of the sports association.
January - The Sports Association has applied for a grant of £3,400 from the South Norfolk Northern River Board. If successful the money will allow us to support existing clubs and also set up new table tennis, tennis and rounders groups. It will also help with the formation of a Hethersett Social Athletics Club and provide funding for a junior section of Hethersett Netball Club. The money will also give us the chance to promote the sports association fully and support the Respect Yourself organisation which sends out SMS text messages to young people to help them make informed life choices.
February 8th - The second come and try table tennis evening at Hethersett Methodist Church proved to be a huge success with over 40 people of all ages and standards enjoying two hours of fun and friendship. Due to the success of the evening it has been decided to make this a weekly event for the forseeable future.
February 9th - Dates have been set for the re-launch of two HAMSA Running Groups under the guidance of coaches Paul Evans and Ron Marsh. The Monday morning group will start up on March 11th and run for an initial six sessions from 9.15 until 10.15 a.m on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. The Thursday evening group will start on April 18th and continue through to July 4th.
February 11th - The quarterly HAMSA meeting was held at Park Farm Hotel with 16 members attending. It was announced that the association has been successful in receiving a grant of over £3,000 from the South Norfolk Northern River Board's fund. Plans are being laid to introduce three more clubs in the summer - tennis clubs at Hethersett and Little Melton and a family rounders club at Hethersett. Come and Try events will be arranged for these. HAMSA is also looking into obtaining corporate membership of Park Farm Leisure Club.
February 12th - Work is continuing into obtaining gants to improve facilities on Hethersett Memroial Playing Field with a major refurbishment and extension to the existing pavilion. Meetings will be held with builders and architects in the near future with planning permissions being applied for and grant applications being made to Sport England and the Norfolk County Council Community Building Fund.
March 1st - It has been confirmed that at least seven sports will be featured at the come and try evening on Hethersett Memorial Playing on March 22nd. Sports will include: Football, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics, Archery, Cycle Speedway and Handball. Others may well be added.
March 14th - It is announced that Hethersett has become the first village or town in the United Kingdom to receive a Prime Minister's Big Society award for outstanding contribution to the Olympic Legacy. Prime Minister David Cameron praised the village for all its initiatives in the fields of fitness, well being and sport. Media cuttings can be viewed in the relevant section of this site.
April 22nd - Twenty two people attend the latest Sports Association meeting which celebrated past successes and looked to the future with more sports clubs in the pipeline including tennis clubs at Hethersett and Little Melton, a rounders club at Hethersett and a social cycling club based around the three villages.
May 22nd - Hethersett held its annual come and try sports evening on the Memorial Field with a number of sports including football, cricket, rounders, cycle speedway, petanque, cornball featuring. The attendance was disappointing (possibly due to a major school meeting on the same evening). We will be looking at the format of this evening in the future with the possibility of changing it.
June 9th - Hethersett and the Meltons win the Active Norfolk South Norfolk Village Games for the third consecutive year - just pipping Diss to first place. We will be competing in the Norfolk finals for the third year running on July 14th.
June 10th - Hethersett is presented with a Big Society award at 10 Downing Street to mark its outstanding contribution to the Olympic Legacy and Community Spirit. Hethersett is the first village or town in the country to receive the award which was presented by Prime Minister David Cameron.
June - A new cycling club - Hethersett Velo Club - is set up in the village with the backing of Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association. The club organises regular rides for cycclists of all abilities and ages.
July 1st - The latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association took place at Park Farm Hotel and the grant cheque for over £3,800 was presented and gained Media coverage. This will give us the opportunity to start up even more sports and fitness groups.
July - It is announced that the planning application to extend and modernise the existing pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field will be heard by South Norfolk Council on August 14th. The proposed extension will provide meeting and kitchen facilities, improved storage and changing facilities and will enhance and support the ideals of ths sports association.
July 6th to 7th - Open weekend proves another great success as Hethersett continues to follow the 2012 Olympic legacy. July 6th saw Sport in the Park developed this year with a village fete and evening entertainment. Over 20 come and try sports were again featured. July 7th saw the annual two mile funrun again attract over 200 competitors with the youngest aged four and the oldest 74. The afternoon saw 21 teams battling it out at a ladies five-a-side football tournament which was won by Lowestoft Ladies who beat Thorpe Ladies in the final.
July 14th - Hethersett and the Meltons finish runners-up in the Active Norfolk Village games county finals at UEA Sportspark. We finished joint top with Diss but were beaten on the number of first places with Diss scoring five to our two. It is still a remarkable achievement for our village competing against much larger market towns. This year we relegated the winners of the last two years - Downham Market - into third place.
July 28th - A come and try sports afternoon is held at Hethersett Village Hall featuring rounders and tennis. Enough interest is shown in both to bring about the possibility of starting two new groups in the Sprin of 2014.
August - Planning Permission is given by South Norfolk Council for major extension and rennovation of the existing pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field
August - A new croquet club is formed, based on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. Meeting one evening a week and on Saturday afternoons the club is regularly attracting over 20 players
August - A new petanque terrain is built on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field
August - The new Hethersett Velo Club goes from strength to strength with regular club runs attracting over 70 riders.
September - Hethersett Running Group finishes for the winter. Likely to re-start in the Spring.
September 20th - Hethersett Methodist Church Table Tennis Club set to resume after its summer break.
September 30th - Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association holds its regular quarterly meeting at Park Farm Hotel. The meeting issues the following grants from money obtained through the Northern River Valleys Neighbourhood Board community pot - £100 to Hethersett Athletic Football Club to start up an Under-6 group, £500 to Hethersett Croquet Club, £400 for a petanque terrain on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field, £500 to Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club to extend its headquarters, £250 to Crusaders Rugby Club for equipment for its youth teams. In all the Association has given out £2,800 in support of fitness, sport and well being in Hethersett and the Meltons. The association is also looking into the idea of working with Active Norfolk and South Norfolk Council to provide a weekly mobile gym in Hethersett. It is also supporting efforts to bring an all weather sports facility to Hethersett and working with other groups to organise a community fireworks display in 2014. A member of the association - Mel Perkins MBE - is looking to organise a Hethersett Superstars competition for teams of eight in 2014 and the association is backing Hethersett Environmental Action Team's plans to put up new walking and street maps throughout the village and also to produce a booklet of local walks.
October 1st - Voting begins for the award of community grants by Lloyds Bank. Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association has been nominated for funding to equip a kitchen in the proposed new pavilion on the Memorial Playing Field. The amount of money awarded will depend on the number of votes cast either via the Internet or SMS texting.
October - Hethersett has reached the final three in the Active Norfolk EDP Norfolk Sports Village of thr Year competition. The winners will be announced at a special reception in Norwich on November 6th.
November - It is announced that a new mobile gym will meet on Wednesdays from November 20th in the Jubilee Youth Club in Back Lane, Hethersett. The club will be open to anyone over the age of 16 and run for an initial six months from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. This is an initiative supported by the sports association, Active Norfolk and South Norfolk Council.
November 6th - Hethersett is named Active Norfolk, Radio Norfolk, Eastern Daily Press Sports Village of the Year for the second time in three yeras. Association chairman Peter Steward represents the village at a special presentation evening in Norwich Forum and receives the trophy from Norwich City and England internatinal goalkeeper John Ruddy.
November 28th - A major meeting was held at Hethersett Junior School between members of the Parish Council, representatives of HAMSA member Sports Clubs, School and Community stakeholders. The purpose was to discuss the feasibility of constructing a 3G “All Weather” pitch on Diocesan land at the rear of the Junior School. A furhter meeting will be held in February 2014.
