Minutes of Meeting of Hethersett and Meltons Sports Association at Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett, June 30th, 2014
Apologies
Apologies were received from Maria Alborough, Harold Kerslake, Claire Burke, Bobby Dowling, Leslie Dale, Mel Perkins, Ron Butcher, Maurice Durrant and Wayne Johnson.
Round Table Introductions
There were 10 members present – Gary Wyatt (GW), David Bills (DB), Bart Anderton (BA), Shane Hull (SH), Peter Hoult (PH), Peter Steward (PS), Jacqui Horsfield (JH), Frankie (F), Helen Lawn (HL) and Steve Walker (SW). Round the table introductions took place.

These had been circulated and were taken as read.
Treasurer’s Report
SH produced the latest accounts showing that the association has a surplus of £1,047.35. £400 has been ring fenced for the junior netball section and £50 set aside for the table tennis club.
Sports Clubs/Group Updates/Coming Events
BA reported that Hethersett Velo Club has 175 members with regular club rides attracting over 40 riders for each session. It is now one of the largest cycling clubs in the country. Plans are already being formulated for the 2015 Hethersett 30/60/90 event which is likely to attract up to 700 riders. BA will confirm the date but it is thought to be Easter Sunday. On 12th July BA and a colleague will be undertaking a ride of over 250 miles from Wymondham to London and then up to Dunwich and back to Wymondham.
PH reported that Hethersett Croquet Club’s season is halfway through and still proving popular. Two pitches on the Memorial Field are being used.
JH reported that work on setting up a junior section of Hethersett Netball Club could start soon with the possibility of launching the section in September. The club is currently looking for training facilities but having some problems finding a suitable venue. SH agreed to put the lining for netball of the tennis court at the village hall on the agenda for the next Hethersett Parish Council meeting.
SH updated members on attempts to create an all weather sports facility in the village. He and Wayne Johnson have had an initial meeting with Hethersett Academy about the possibility of putting this on their land and will report back to the next meeting.
There was no update on a potential petanque club.
PH reported on the continued success of the Queen’s Road Badminton Club with regular Thursday evening sessions and coaching continuing.
GW reported on the new cabinet in Hethersett Library which will have the dual purpose of displaying trophies and awards won by the village and also a section featuring village archives. A community noticeboard is being placed above the cabinet
SH reported on the coming Open Weekend which will feature a come and try sports event on Saturday July 5th, an inter-denominational church service in Hethersett Social Club on Sunday July 6th followed by the annual run the square event and a concert by Wymondham Rock Choir and Hethersett Academy Choir in St Remigius in the evening.
PS and PH reported on the come and try event which is being held in conjunction with Active Norfolk. This will feature archery, football, cricket, bowls, cycle speedway, petanque, croquet, netball, tag rugby, cycling, tug of war, cornhole, table tennis, badminton and athletics. There will also be a barbecue run by the Queen’s Head and refreshments at the bowls club.
SH reported on the race clock which is now owned by the Sports Association thanks to a grant from South Norfolk Council. He has already had numerous enquiries about hiring the clock which will make its village debut at the run the square event.
PS reported on the success of the latest running group course run by Norfolk Olympian Paul Evans on the Memorial Field. The current course will conclude on July 3rd but Paul Evans will begin a new eight week course on July 10th.
PS reported on the coming Norfolk Village Games county final. Hethersett and the Meltons won the South Norfolk area event for the fourth year in a row. This year’s county finals will be the last, although it is likely that the South Norfolk competition will continue. The association has agreed to meet 50% of the cost of the team t-shirts which have been ordered.
DB stated that plans to start a dementia support group have been slowed down whilst proper plans and strategies are set-up.
Frankie from Fitness Express introduced herself and offered support for the association and events by individual clubs. She also offered facilities for posters and advertising materials and prizes for competitions etc.
The proposed community fireworks display will not take place this year but is still a possibility for 2015.
PH reported on the Quest treasure hunt walking competition and members agreed to finance a prize of up to £25.
PS reported on the success of Hethersett Athletic Football Club with a number of youth teams winning trophies. The club now has a 100 Club with places available at a cost of £5 per month with a top prize each month of £100.
PS reported on the successes of Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club and invited members to sample the delights of the ground at Flordon. The club is currently putting the emphasis on youth with an annual schools’ festival.
PH reported on the table tennis club which is organised jointly by the sports association and Hethersett Methodist Church. It will continue on Friday evenings until the school holidays and then take a break until September.
SW is now involved with Hethersett Jubilee Youth Club and will report back at the next meeting.
PS has resigned from Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Trustees and a vacancy on that body therefore exists.
Requests for Financial Support
PS applied for funding for new junior nets for Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club and will work with DB and the club on grants
South Norfolk Council
DB outlined funding available. PS will ask clubs to give him a new wish list and consider putting this into a new grant application.
Marketing and Publicity
PS will ascertain from Mark Heazle exactly what the money ringfenced by South Norfolk Council for publicity and marketing can be used for. He will look into leaflets, banners and even T Shirts for club members. The association is looking to run a stall at the Societies Day in September with member clubs being invited to hand out promotional material.
