HETHERSETT and the Meltons’ Sports Association is looking for new members as it continues to grow.
The association has just completed its sixth year in existence and also incorporates the Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee.
Its aim is to support and encourage sport, fitness, health and well being throughout Hethersett, Little Melton and Great Melton and over the past six years has provided money for many start-up groups ranging from croquet and netball to football and table tennis.
“The list of sports and leisure groups we have been able to support has been extensive and includes croquet, yoga, badminton, athletics, bowls, cycle speedway, football,
cricket, rugby, table tennis and many more,” said chairman and secretary Peter Steward.
The association also supports and helps to organise the annual two mile run the square funrun which this year will take place on Sunday July 16th.
The association’s latest meeting took place in Park Farm Hotel with reports from all the major sports and leisure groups from the villages. Members heard that the new community facilities at Hethersett Academy have been opened and are available to the public outside school hours.
The association is also supporting grant applications for a refurbished and upgraded pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. It will also be funding a six week running course on Hethersett Memorial Field which will take place on six consecutive Thursday evenings from June 8th to July 13th from 7 to 8 pm. The course will be led by Norfolk Olympian Paul Evans and is open to runners of all ages and abilities. The course is free and there is no need to book.
Membership of the association for clubs and groups is just £5 a year with individual membership free. “We would love to see more people and groups involved in the association so we can grow even more and support more groups,” the chairman said.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday July 5th at Park Farm Hotel at 7.30pm. Further details are available on 01603 811052.

Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association (HAMSA) is throwing its weight behind plans to build a community pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. Planning permission has already been granted for renovation, extension and modernisation, but to date application for grants has not proved fruitful.
The latest meeting of HAMSA featured a lengthy discussion on the future or the pavilion. Members agreed that any building should be for multi-purpose community use and not just for sports groups/clubs. The pavilion should become a focal point for the village. It was agreed that work is needed to illustrate the positive impact that a pavilion would have on the community. It was underlined that the current pavilion isn’t fit for purpose and is an “embarrassment to the village.” Suggestions for use of a new building included a daily café and use as a community facility for meetings.
HAMSA has awarded a grant of £100 to Hethersett Athletic Football Club to finance the start up for a new under-6s team. The next meeting of HAMSA will be the annual meeting and has been set for Monday 23rd January, 2017, at 7.30 p.m at Park Farm Hotel.

Hethersett’s annual two mile village funrun will take place on June 26th. The ever popular event has attracted hundreds of serious and fun runners since it started in 2010 as part of the village’s run up to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Hethersett and the Meltons will also be entering a team in the Active Norfolk Village Games Finals at UEA Sportspark on July 10th and also taking part in a netball tournament in April and an indoor rounders competition at the end of January.
The coming dates formed part of the agenda at the latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association at Park Farm Hotel. Reports from member clubs showed that the villages continue to encourage local people to take exercise and improve their fitness, health and well being.
“Much has been discussed nationally in recent weeks about supporting sport and fitness in local communities. Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association has been doing this since 2010 and, thanks to the support of clubs and individuals, we feel we have made an important contribution to improving the fitness of local people.
“The sports association continues to go from strength to strength and is now recognised and accepted as an integral part of the local fitness scene. Sports clubs in Hethersett and the Meltons give regular exercise to hundreds, if not thousands of local people,” said sports association chairman Peter Steward.
The sports association is open to clubs (membership £5 per year) and individuals (free membership). The next meeting will be at Park Farm Hotel on April 11th at 7.30 p.m. Full details of the association are available on its web site at www.handmsa.weebly.com It also has a Facebook page.

A community sports group is appealing for volunteers as it prepares plans for a million pound plus development on land at Hethersett Academy.
The Hethersett Olympic Legacy Sports Complex (HOLSC) Group is putting together a business plan ahead of applying for grants for new facilities which will include a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) or 3G playing surface, new changing and administration facilities and an indoor sports hall.
“This is a very important community project. Hethersett is known nationally for its Olympic legacy following the 2012 London Games and we want to build on that. We would love to hear from people with legal, surveying, building, financial and accountancy skills to help turn our dream into reality. Using volunteers would also help to keep costs of the project to a minimum,” said Shane Hull, Chair of the HOLSC Strategy Group.
The group is contacting local sports and fitness groups and clubs to establish the level of demand and volume of use for the new facilities which would be available for school pupils during the day and the community in evenings and at weekends.
The scheme is being supported fully by Norfolk County Council and Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association. Officers from South Norfolk Council’s Leisure team are also assisting and advising the group on various aspects of the project.
“Over the past few years Hethersett has dedicated itself to improving the health, fitness and well being of local people through the setting up of numerous groups and through supporting existing groups and clubs. Our achievements have far outstripped the facilities available to us in Hethersett and the Meltons. This new sports complex will give us the facilities we need to continue our work and to keep the Olympic legacy alive over the coming years,” said chair of Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association Peter Steward.

Hethersett is to get its own sports association to help promote recreation in the village.
Village resident Peter Steward has been appointed village sports co-ordinator on behalf of Active Norfolk with the remit of organising a team to take part in the 2011 Norfolk Village Games and promoting sport and recreation in the village.
Hethersett Sports Association (HSA) will feature representatives of all sports currently played in the village along with other key village people with an interest in sport and recreation. Its aims will be threefold.
To organise people to take part in as many sports as possible in the June 2011 South Norfolk Village Games.
To enhance and promote sport of all kinds in the village and encourage as many people as possible to take an active part
To lobby for improved facilities.
Hethersett Sports Association will be working closely with other village groups including Hethersett Parish Council, Hethersett Olympic Committee, Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Committee and Active Norfolk.
"I am currently contacting individuals and various sports clubs to join the association. Working together we can have a much louder voice in promoting sport, recreation and fitness in the village. I am hoping that being a part of the association will also be beneficial to individual sports clubs," Peter Steward said.
A number of sports clubs within the village have already agreed to be part of Hethersett Sports Association.
"I would love to hear from anybody or any group who wants to join us," Peter Steward added.

A number of new sports and leisure clubs could soon be springing up in South Norfolk following the latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
It was agreed to put together a grant bid for new clubs and equipment for existing clubs with the aim of launching petanque, rounders and tennis clubs in the villages next Spring.
The association is also looking into the possibility of starting up a number of minor sports such as goalball, handball and volleyball.
“We have a wonderful opportunity in our three villages of marking Olympic year with a true legacy by starting up new clubs and supporting existing ones. A number of village groups will be working together to look at the whole question of fitness and well being and encourage more people to take part in regular exercise,” said association chairman Peter Steward.
Plans could also see another beginners’ running club being started in the Spring to function alongside the existing social running club started by the association this year in partnership with Active Norfolk.
“As well as introducing new clubs we will be looking to provide fun facilities such as cement table tennis tables and basketball hoops at various venues. These are exciting times for fitness in our villages,” Peter Steward said, adding that grants would also be sought to extend and improve the existing pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field,
The meeting celebrated an outstanding year for sport in Hethersett and the Meltons which saw their team win the Active Norfolk South Norfolk Village Games and finish runners-up in the county finals to Downham Market.
Reports were also given on the three day Hethersett Open Weekend, the May come and try sports evening, the massive Sport in the Park event, the villages’ pledge to fitness campaign and the off route visit of the Official London 2012 Olympic flame.
Nest year will also see the association launch a campaign encouraging people to walk and cycle within the villages and also giving support to extend cycle paths between Hethersett and Little Melton and Hethersett and Wymondham.
The association is open to clubs and individuals either working in or with an interest in sport, recreation, fitness and well being. The next meeting will be at Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett, at 7.30 p.m on November 26th. More information on the association is available on the web site www.handmsa.weebly.com

November 2012
The next meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association will take place at Park Farm Hotel on November 26th at 7.30 p.m.
The association will be reflecting on a hugely successful year for sport and recreation in Hethersett and also looking forward to events in 2013.
The meeting will hear about a sporting year that brought Hethersett an off route visit from the official London Olympic flame and saw the newly formed Hethersett Social Running Club named Run England’s Eastern Area Club of the Year.
Next year the association will be supporting major local events such as the 30/60 mile cycle run, the village’s open weekend from July 5th to 7th and a Come and Try Sports Evening on May 22nd. It will also be overseeing the village’s entry in the Active Norfolk South Norfolk Village Games – a competition Hethersett has won over the past two years.
Next year will also see the association aiming to: Improve sports facilities and launch new clubs in partnership with Active Norfolk and South Norfolk Council, lobby for improved cycle paths between Little Melton and Hethersett and Hethersett and Wymondham, launch a campaign to encourage local people to leave their cars at home and walk and cycle and encourage more women and girls to take an active part in sport and exercise.
“This year has been an outstanding one for Hethersett as far as sport, exercise and fitness have been concerned. We are looking to make 2013 just as good,” said association chairman Peter Steward.
November 2012
Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association looked back on an outstanding year of sport and forward to building a unique Olympic inspired legacy at its latest meeting at Park Farm Hotel.
A very well attended meeting celebrated 2012 sporting success that had seen established sports clubs expand and the setting up of new social running groups. Other successes included come and try sporting events, the annual Hethersett Open Weekend and the first Hethersett 30/60 cycle ride. A number of local groups worked together tirelessly throughout the year to improve the fitness of local residents. Highlight of the year was the off route visit to Hethersett of the official London Olympic flame, an event that attracted almost 2,000 people in July.
“The association is going from strength to strength and our aim is to improve fitness and offer more sport and leisure facilities for all ages from the tiniest tots to pensioners. We will be working with groups such as the Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee, Hethersett Parish Council, South Norfolk Council, Active Norfolk and many others to ensure that sport and fitness is kept high on the agenda,” said chairman Peter Steward.
Hethersett once again won the South Norfolk Village Games for villages and market towns with populations of over 5,000 and come runners-up to Downham Market in the county finals. The villages will be entering teams in Active Norfolk’s alternative village games in January. The association is also currently waiting to hear whether a grant application to the South Norfolk Northern River Valley’s Board has been successful.
The association has set a number of aims for 2013 which include: Improving sports and leisure facilities in Hethersett and the Meltons, setting up new clubs in a variety of sports including tennis, rounders, handball and other minority sports and encouraging more participation in sport by girls and women.
The association will also be lobbying for improved cycle paths between Little Melton and Hethersett and Hethersett and Wymondham and launching a campaign encouraging more walking and cycling and less vehicle use in the three villages.
A special come and try sports evening will be held on Hethersett Memorial Field on May 22nd when the public will be able to try their hand at up to eight different sporting activities free of charge. The association will also be supporting Hethersett’s annual open weekend which will run from July 5th to 7th.
The group’s next meeting will be on January 28th. Full details of coming events and other information are available on the web site at www.handmsa.weebly.com
March 2014
Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association (HaMSA) will have time on its side thanks to a grant from South Norfolk Council.
The £1200 grant will be used to purchase a digital race clock to be used for local events including the annual Hethersett funrun which this year will take place on July 6th. It is hoped to have the clock in place for the 30/60/90 cycle ride being organised by Hethersett Velo Club on April 20th. The clock will also be available for use by clubs affiliated to the sports association and be hired out to other organisations for a fee.
The sports association, in conjunction with Active Norfolk, will be organising a come and try event on July 5th as part of the annual Hethersett Open Weekend celebrations. Sports available to try free of charge will include archery, football, cricket, rounders, cycle speedway, bowls, petanque, netball and croquet. Hethersett Velo Club will also lead cycle rides around the village.
The association will also oversee Hethersett and the Meltons’ entry into this year’s South Norfolk Village Games at Long Stratton on June 8th. Hethersett will be defending the title they have won over the past three years.
A number of clubs affiliated to HaMSA are looking to attract new members.
The table tennis group based at Hethersett Methodist Church is continuing to thrive and now has four tables in play on Friday evenings and has room for some newcomers. The club caters for players of all abilities from beginners to experienced. Juniors under-16 play from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m and seniors from 7.30 until 9 p.m. Sessions cost £1 per head.
The social running group will resume on April 3rd after its winter break. The group gives people of all ages and abilities the chance to run together. It will meet weekly on Thursday evenings on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field from 6.30 until 7.30 p.m.
Hethersett Queen’s Road Badminton Club is also looking for new members. The club already has 20 youngsters at its early session but is looking for improvers to join its later session at Hethersett Old Hall School. The session is open to improvers aged over 12 and adults who want to take their game forward. It runs from 8 until 9 p.m and cost per session is £2 and includes support from qualified coaches.
The annual meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association will take place at Park Farm Hotel at 7.30 p.m on April 14th. It is open to anybody interested in sport, fitness and well being.
March 2014
The future of a South Norfolk mobile gym will be decided over the next few weeks.
The community gym at Hethersett has been meeting regularly on Wednesdays for the past six months, supported by South Norfolk Council, Active Norfolk and Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
Its trial period will continue until May when a decision will be made on whether there is enough support to continue. Currently sessions at the Jubilee Youth Club in Back Lane take place from 10 a.m until 2 p.m under the direction of qualified instructors.
Numbers to date have been slightly disappointing and the future of the gym will be discussed at the next meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association at Park Farm Hotel on April 14th.
The meeting will look at the viability of setting up an organising committee to run regular gym sessions, the buying and storing equipment through grants and the possibility of holding evening and weekend sessions in order to attract more people:
“We realise that holding sessions during the day mean that many people cannot take part. So we will be looking at all the possibilities and how we can keep the gym going when its trial ends at the end of May,” said Chair of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association Peter Steward.
Meanwhile sessions at a cost of £3 will continue in the youth club premises on Wednesdays and new members will be made very welcome.
June 2014
Hethersett are once again South Norfolk sporting champions - for the fourth year in a row.
Hethersett and the Meltons won the large villages/market towns section of the Active Norfolk South Norfolk Sports and go on to compete in the county finals at UEA Sportspark on July 13th.
Once again the fierce but friendly rivalry between Hethersett and Diss was to the fore with the teams locked together on points at the end of the 11 sport competition at Long Stratton. A countback system also failed to separate the two teams and the competition was declared a tie with both going through to the county final.
Last year saw Diss and Hethersett tie in the county final, only for the top prize to be awarded to Diss on countback.
“It was another great day of family sport and we were delighted to win the South Norfolk event for the fourth year in a row. In the last three years we have been runners-up in the county competition and so will be looking to go one better this year,” said Village Sports Co-ordinator Peter Steward.
The competition was split into three groups for small villages (populations under 1250), medium villages (populations between 1251 and 4250) and large villages and market towns (populations over 4251 and under 10,000). Hethersett and the Meltons came top in a number of sports including archery, badminton, darts, table tennis and five-a-side football. Eleven sports were featured with many being divided into junior and senior competitions.
The Hethersett team featured well over 50 competitors of all ages from eight to eighty.
“It really is a competition for families and people of all ages. Our latest trophy will be on show, alongside many of the other trophies and awards gained by the village over the past 10 years in a new cabinet in Hethersett Library,” Peter Steward added.

It's been another busy and highly productive year for Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association (HaMSA), which has continued to support its member clubs with a number of grants being awarded.
The money came to the association through the generosity of South Norfolk Council and through the valued support from local councillors Leslie Dale and David Bills.
The sporting year saw hundreds of people take part in a come and try event on the Memorial Field with over 15 sports on offer from archery to tug of war. The following day well over 200 people took part in the run the square funrun. Hethersett and the Meltons were crowned South Norfolk sports champions for the fourth successive year after a day of competition at Long Stratton. This year we went a step further, however, to win the Norfolk title after coming runners-up in the three previous years. This all followed Hethersett being named Active Norfolk/EDP Sports Village of the year for the second time in three years.
At the October meeting of the association, it was decided to amalgamate HaMSA and the Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee to produce one body to continue the Olympic Legacy in the village. HaMSA will now be responsible for organising the village's sixth Open weekend which has been provisionally booked for July 4th and 5th with a come and try event on the Saturday and the two mile funrun on the Sunday. Many clubs have benefited financially through the association during 2014 including Hethersett Netball Club, Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club, Hethersett Athletic Football Club, Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club, the Respect Yourself group and Hethersett Croquet Club. It is hoped to start a new tennis club in 2015 thanks to a partnership being developed with Hethersett Academy.
The association was also represented at the Societies Day in September when we were heartened by one couple who told us that they had chosen to move to Hethersett because "it's such a doing village with so much going on." More details about HaMSA are available on the web site www.handmsa.weebly.com.
Many of the sports trophies and mementoes from the past six years are now on display along with village archive material in Hethersett Library. The next meeting of the sports association will be on February 2nd, 2015 at Park Farm Hotel. Anyone interested in sport, fitness and well being is welcome. Anyone wanting more details can contact me on 811052 or via e-mail at [email protected]

Two major fitness and sports organisations in a South Norfolk village are amalgamating to keep the London 2012 Olympic legacy flame alive.
Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association (HaMSA) and Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee have merged to produce a major organisation to promote fitness, health, well being and sport in Hethersett, Great Melton and Little Melton.
The decision to combine forces was taken at the latest meeting of the sports association at Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett. It will now be responsible for organising the annual Hethersett Open Weekend as well as starting new sports and fitness groups and clubs and supporting existing ones.
“Over the past few years the two groups have worked side by side to promote and organise sport and fitness programmes in the villages and it now seems an appropriate time for them to amalgamate on a formal footing to continue the work that led up to the 2012 London games and beyond and which culminated in the Olympic flame coming to Hethersett and the village being the first village, town or city in the United Kingdom to receive the Prime Minister’s Big Society award,” said HaMSA chairman Peter Steward.
Throughout 2014, HaMSA has been able to financially support a number of clubs and groups thanks to a grant from South Norfolk Council. This has seen the setting up of a croquet club and a junior section of Hethersett Netball Club along with improvements to the Hethersett Memorial Bowls Club pavilion. Grants have also been given to the Respect Yourself text messaging service, Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club, Hethersett Athletic Football Club and many others.
“By working in partnership with South Norfolk Council we have been able to set-up and help many individual clubs during the year and we are looking forward to continuing this work in 2015 with the sixth Open Weekend from July 4th to 5th which will once again feature a come and try sports event and a two mile funrun. We are also looking into the possible launch of a new tennis club,” Peter Steward added.
This year saw Hethersett and the Meltons win the Active Norfolk South Norfolk Village Games for the fourth year running and become Norfolk village champions for the first time after finishing runners-up the previous three years
More details about HaMSA are available on the web site www.handmsa.weebly.com. Many of the sports trophies and mementoes from the past six years are now on display along with village archive material in Hethersett Library.
The next meeting of the sports association will be on February 2nd, 2015, at Park Farm Hotel. Anyone interested in sport, fitness and well being is welcome. Further details are available from Peter Steward on 01603 811052 or via e-mail at [email protected]
December 2014 Hethersett to Have Major New Sports Complex
A NEW community project to provide top class sports facilities is being launched in Hethersett. Plans for a new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) are being put forward as part of a three-phase scheme on Hethersett Academy land. Alongside the MUGA, are plans for new changing facilities, followed by a third phase to feature a new indoor sports facility added. It is likely that the new Hethersett Olympic Legacy Sports Complex (HOLSC) will cost in excess of £1 million and plans are currently being drawn up and will be followed by grant applications. Two community groups have been set up to take the scheme forward.
A project/strategy team consisting of village volunteers and members of the Academy Management team will look at the overall picture for the complex and an implementation team will deal with plans and grants designed to bring the ideas to fruition. The aim is to have at least the MUGA in place to co-incide with the next Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro in 2016. “It is wonderful news that Hethersett Academy, Hethersett Parish Council, Sports and Community Groups have all come together and will endeavour to bring to reality, a vision of a Community Sports Complex, which will create a necessary and lasting Olympic legacy in our fine village,” said Shane Hull, a Hethersett Parish Councillor who is chair of the strategy group. His view was backed up by Hethersett Academy Principal Gareth Stevens who said: “Boosting participation in sport can generate a variety of socio-economic benefits. Sport can, and does, make a profound and positive impact on individuals, communities and wider society. Physical activity, including sport, is linked to reduced risk of over 20 illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and some cancers.”
The MUGA complex will offer first class playing and training facilities for a number of outdoor sports including football, rugby, netball, hockey and many others. The indoor facility will facilitate badminton, table tennis, indoor bowls, martial arts, dance and a climbing wall. The complex will be run by a management group which will be put in place in the future and is a direct result of Hethersett’s 2012 London Olympic Legacy which has seen the village heralded as Norfolk sporting champions and gain a coveted Prime Minister’s Big Society award. “We have been determined in Hethersett to keep the Olympic Legacy alive and to help it make a real difference to people’s lives. This new complex will provide top class facilities for individuals and sports groups and is a massive step towards improving facilities and enhancing fitness and well being in Hethersett,” said Peter Steward who is a member of the strategy group and Chair of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
When built, the complex, which will be situated on the bottom of the existing Academy Field close to Back Lane, will be used by the school during the day in term times, but will be available to the community evenings and weekends. “During the day the complex will be used by the Academy to promote sports participation and foster well-being as part of the broad and extended curriculum. Outside of the Academy day it will be used by the local community, again to promote sport participation as part of a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Stevens added. The overall management of the project will be undertaken by Academy Business Manager Richard Cole.
January 2015
The next meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association will take place at Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett, on February 2nd at 7.30 p.m.
The meeting is open to both clubs and individuals interested in furthering sport, fitness, health and well being in the local area. Over the past two years the association has given away hundreds of pounds to local sports clubs thanks to a substantial grant from South Norfolk Council.
“The association was born out of a wish to continue the sporting and fitness legacy of the 2012 London Olympic games and we have now amalgamated with the former Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee to provide one body to promote sport and exercise for local people,” said association chair Peter Steward.
As well as providing funding, the association supports, promotes and helps organise many events during the year including the Hethersett 30/60/90 cycle ride organised by Hethersett Velo Club and which this year takes place on April 5th, the Hethersett Open Weekend of events which will take place on July 4th and 5th and Hethersett and the Melton’s entry into the annual Active Norfolk Village Games, the county finals of which will take place in July.
The meeting will also receive an update on proposed major sporting facilities development which will see a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), changing facilities and a new indoor sports hall being built on Hethersett Academy land.
“The association is thriving and a perfect example of how villages such as ours can not only keep the London Olympic Legacy alive but can also look forward to the 2016 games in Brazil, whilst providing fitness activities, starting up new clubs and supporting existing ones,” Peter Steward added.
