Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association 2014
January to March
The Sports Association continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the support of individuals and clubs.
The Association has been awarded £300 from Lloyds Bank under its community fund and this money will be used to start up more new groups and support existing clubs and groups.
Hethersett Velo Club continues to go from strength to strength with over 170 members and a 30-60-90 event has been lined-up for April 20th.
Other clubs finding success thanks to grants from the association include the new memorial Playing Field Croquet Club, the weekly table tennis club at the Methodist Church and the Bowls Club who have completed the refurbishment of their headquarters, due in part to a grant from the Sports Association.
Meetings have taken place to discuss the possibility of all weather sports facilities on ground at Hethersett Junior School. This has the full support of the sports association and a letter of support has been sent to the diocesan board who will make a decision on whether the idea can go ahead.
Hethersett and the Meltons will once again be fielding a team in the South Norfolk Village Sports in June - looking to win for the fourth year in a row.
It was announced that the Thursday night running group will re-start at the beginning of April for runners of all abilities and ages.
Up to 100 youngsters are now training each week at Crusaders Rugby Club, helped by a grant from the sports association.
This year's Hethersett Open Weekend (the fifth) will take place on July 5th and 6th and include the annual run the square two mile funrun on the Sunday and a come and try sports event on the Memorial Playing Field on the Saturday. This will be organised jointly by Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association and Active Norfolk. Sports already confirmed include archery, five-a-side football, quick cricket, bowls, cycle speedway, petanque, croquet, netball, tag rugby, cycling and tug-of-war.
Plans are continuing to obtain quotes and grants for the renovation of the pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Field.
The Sports Association has received a grant from South Norfolk Council to purchase a digital race clock which will be used throughout the year. The clock will also be used by local schools and can be hired out by other groups both inside and outside the village.
Other plans in an early stage include a walking treasure hunt style competition and a sporting challenge which will see teams competing throughout the Spring and Summer in a number of sports.
March 27th - A meeting is held to discuss the future of the mobile gym which has been taking place on Wednesdays over the past five months. To continue after May an organising committee will have to be set up and this will be discussed at the next Sports Association meeting in April.
March 28th - A new Media release is sent out with regards to the digital clock and other association matters. A number of clubs including table tennis and badminton have appealed for new players.
April - It is decided that the weekly mobile gym sessions will stop due to lack of funding and disappointing numbers.
April - A new fun competition aimed at enhancing fitness is launched. Quest is a series of six walks in the South Norfolk area with 12 clues on each walk. Quest will culminate in a treasure hunt in July.
April - Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association has been awarded a grant of £1,300 to purchase a digital racing clock. It will be one of only two in the whole of Norfolk and is likely to make its debut at the village fun run in July. The clock will be available free of charge to any club affiliated to the association. It will also be available to hire for £30 with a £30 deposit with preference going to organisations in South Norfolk.
April 13th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club raise £600 for the Wymondham based Star Throwers charity from a charity match against a Tony Selby Select XI.
April 13th - Hethersett Athletic Under-14s beat Thetford Bulldogs 5-2 to win the South Norfolk Under-14s League Cup. The club's Under-11s are also crowned champions of their section of the Norfolk Youth Combination.
April 14th - The quarterly meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association is held at Park Farm Hotel. Peter Steward, Peter Hoult and Shane Hull are re-elected chair, secretary and treasurer respectively. A new cabinet is to be placed in Hethersett Library to show off the various sports trophies won by Hethersett.
April 20th - Over 500 riders take part in the third 30-60-90 cycle ride, starting and finishing at Hethersett Social Club.
April 26th - Hethersett Memorial Bowls Club opens its new pavilion which has been made possible from a number of grants including one of £500 from HaMSA.
April 27th - Hethersett Athletic Under-16s beat Salhouse 6-0 to take the Norwich Sunday Development League Cup. In the team's first season they have also finished runners-up in the league.
April 27th - Hethersett Netball Club finish third in the annual Active Norfolk tournament at the Neatherd High School, Dereham.
May 21st - Hethersett and the meltons Sports Association is presented with a digital race clock, made possible through a £1,300 grant from South Norfolk Council. It is one of only two in the county and will be available for hire free of charge by groups affiliated to HaMSA.
May 21st - Over forty runners of all ages and abilities take part in the first week of a seven week course organised by HaMSA and Active Norfolk. The course, under the leadership of Norfolk Olympic Runner Paul Evans will take place every Thursday evening leading up to the village funrun in July.
May 24th - Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club hosts the British Under-19 Championships which is one by Ricki Johnson from Wednesfield. Hethersett's Ollie Riley finished fourth.
May 25th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club reach the area finals of the Davidstow National Village Cricket Competition thanks to a bye against Reach. They will play either Foxton or Brooke in the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire Final on June 8th.
June 8th - Hethersett and the Meltons win the South Norfolk Village Games for the fourth consecutive year to go through to the county finals on July 13th. This year Hethersett tied for first place with Diss and even a countback system couldn't separate the two teams - both of whom go through to the finals.
June 8th - Hethersett and Tas Valley's interest in the Davidstow National Village Cricket tournament comes to an end as they are beaten by Foxton from Cambridgeshire by five wickets in the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire area final.
June 30th - The quarterly meeting of the association takes place in Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett. Minutes are available on this site
July 5th/6th - Hethersett's fifth annual Open Weekend takes place with four events over two days. Saturday 5th saw a come and try sports event on the Memorial Field which featured 14 sports including Archery, five-a-side football, bowls, cycle speedway, cycling, petanque, croquet, netball, tag rugby, tug of war, cornhole, table tennis and badminton. Sunday saw an inter-denominational church service held in Hethersett Social Club. This was followed by 215 people taking part in the two mile run the square funrun with Adam Lewis finishing first in a time of just over 10 minutes. The weekend was rounded off by a concert in St Remigius Church featuring Hethersett Academy pupils and the Wymondham Rock Choir.
July 7th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club hold its second schools cricket festival with over 50 girls and boys from seven local schools taking part in a kwik cricket competition. Unfortunately due to heavy rains the final has to be cancelled.
July 10th - A new eight week running group starts under the coaching of Paul Evans. Group to meet on the Memorial Playing Field from 7 until 8 p.m on Thursdays until early September.
July 13th - Hethersett and the Meltons are crowned county champions in the Active Norfolk Village Games after coming runners-up in the previous three years. Hethersett finishes level with Diss but beat them on the countback system after winning tag rugby, tennis, darts, badminton and fitness triathlon. The team consisted of 43 competitors ranging in age from nine to 80. The team were wearing special t-shirts purchased through funding by Hethersett Parish Council and Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association.
July 14th - Hethersett Parish Council praises Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association for its outstanding contribution to fitness, sport and well being in the village.
July 15th - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club win the Wensum 20-20 Cup after beating Eaton in the final.
August 24th - Hethersett Athletic Sunday team beats the club's Under-19s 3-2 in a pre-season friendly for the Lee Thompson Plate, held in memory of youth team player Lee who was tragically killed in a road accident over a decade ago.
October 6th - The latest meeting of Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association votes unanimously to merge with the Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee to provide one over-arching organisation responsible for health, sport, fitness and well being. At the meeting Hethersett Netball Club is presented with a cheque for £400 to set-up and equip a new junior sections and Respect Yourself is presented with a cheque for over £100 by South Norfolk Councillor David Bills.
October - Plans for an all weather sports surface are advancing with land likely to be made available at Hethersett Academy. It is also announced that HaMSA and Hethersett Academy will open a partnership to launch a new tennis club in 2015.
October - It is announced that Hethersett has once again been shortlisted for the Active Norfolk Sporting Village of the Year - a competition we have won twice in the last three years. Other towns/villages shortlisted are Dersingham and Fakenham.
November - Hethersett finish runners-up in the Active Norfolk Sporting Village of the Year competition, losing out in the final to Fakenham.
December - Hethersett Junior Netball Club is awarded £1,255 towards new equipment. It is the 100th award to be handed out by South Norfolk council under their community funding initiative in 2014.
December - It is announced that the 2015 30/60/90 cycle ride will take place on Sunday 5th April, starting and finishing at Hethersett Social Club. The 2015 Hethersett Open Weekend will take place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July with the Saturday featuring sport in the park and the Sunday, the annual two mile funrun.
December - Plans for an extensive all weather sports arena in the village are announced. The new complex on Hethersett Academy land will feature a Multi Use Games Arena (MUGA), modern changing facilities and ultimately a new indoor games hall. Groups are launched to look into the feasibility and planning of the scheme and also its implementation. The aim is to have the MUGA available by the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games as part of the continuing Hethersett Olympic Legacy. The project is given the name of Hethersett Olympic Legacy Sports Complex (HOLSC). The complex will be used by Hethersett Academy during the day but will be available to outside community groups evenings, weekends and school holidays.

December - Hethersett Archives receive a grant from South Norfolk Council to launch a new web site, giving improved access to thousands of historic documents in the village archive. The archive includes many items of a sporting nature.
