Discussion on Future of Association
Members agreed that the association fulfills an important function in the field of sport, fitness, health and well-being. David Bills (DB) said the association plays a vital part in co-ordinating clubs and individuals and allows for the exchange of ideas. He would like to see more people involved and more representation from clubs with some just turning up when they want funding. The association has become a recognised body.
SH said the association is important for improving fitness and also for providing much needed small grants to its member clubs. It is recognised by Active Norfolk as a bona fide fitness organisation, encouraging people to take up sport and fitness. In short the association is a flagship organisation.
Rachel Pailes (RP) said membership of the association had helped her to understand the variety of fitness outlets available to people and helped Rowan House to become involved in the annual run the square funrun.
DB suggested guest speakers could be invited to give presentations at future meetings. Peter Steward (PS) offered to contact Paul Evans with a view to him having an input at a future meeting. Rowan House could also be asked to provide an occasional speaker on fitness matters. DB also mooted the idea of contacting other towns and villages with sports associations to see what they did and how they did it.
Run the Square 2018
SH updated members on the organisation of the ninth village run the square event which will take place on Sunday July 8th, starting and finishing outside Hethersett Junior School. Once again roads will be closed during the event. SH will liaise with RP re involvement from Rowan House. The belief is that Run the Square 2018 could be the biggest so far. Crusaders Rugby Club will once again provide marshals for the event. SH will update members at subsequent meetings.
Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Pavilion Update
Mel Perkins (MP) reported on a number of grants totalling more than £9,000 received by the trustees towards the cost of renovating and improving the pavilion. The trustees will be putting in an application for S106 money which has become available for recreational purposes and which comes from the Heathfields development in Great Melton Road. Applications have to be made to Hethersett Parish Council. MP stated that proposed improvements would turn the pavilion into a major community asset. Obtaining S106 money would allow the field trustees to move forward with their plans.
MP outlined problems caused by the existing sub-standard pavilion which could hamper Hethersett Athletic Football Club's application to step up to the Anglian Combination league. Lack of facilities also prevented Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club from hosting a major national women's event.
Applications For Grants
There were two applications. Hethersett Athletic applied for a start-up grant for a new Under-6 team and Hethersett Badminton Club applied for a grant of up to £100 for additional equipment for junior players. Both were approved with DB offering to look into whether South Norfolk Council will meet one of them. If this is the case, the sports association will meet the other.
