Round Table Introductions
There were 22 present – Peter Steward (chair), Shane Hull (treasurer), Peter Hoult (Sec), Mel Perkins MBE, Fiona Whiting, Colin McDermott, Harold Kerslake, Nigel Bailey, David Bills Everett, Alison Utting, Michelle Melton, Martin Anderton, Wayne Johnson, Maurice Durrant, Alex Bond, Claire Burke, Bobby Dowling, Kathy Floyd, Annie Floyd, Paul Suggitt, Steve Walker and Gary Wyatt. All introduced themselves individually.

These had been circulated and were taken as read.
Treasurer’s Report
Shane Hull reported that the bank account currently contains £167. He is circulating membership fees to various clubs. It is anticipated that the South Norfolk grant will be in the account within the next few weeks.
New Clubs/Equipment Reports
Peter Steward reported that as soon as the grant money arrives he will be purchasing tennis equipment and organising a date with Hethersett Parish Council and Little Melton for come and try evenings. In addition once equipment is purchased the family rounders events will also be organised.
Hethersett and the Meltons Running Club – Maria Alborough is taking over the main running of this group which will now meet on Thursday evenings on the Memorial Playing Field. Paul Evans and Ron Marsh will coach a new beginners’ group at Hethersett Junior School from May 2nd if there is sufficient interest.
Peter Hoult reported on the continued successes of the Queen’s Road Badminton Club and the Methodist Church based table tennis club, both of which will supply participants for the coming South Norfolk Village games in June.
Michelle Melton reported on plans to start up a girls’ section of Hethersett Netball Club which will be funded from the sports association grant.
Many of the Sports Association groups and clubs will be represented at Sport in the Park in July.
Representatives from Crusaders Rugby Club and Great Melton Cricket Club were welcomed to their first meeting since the inaugural get together in 2011.
The Success Story So Far and Coming and Past Events
Shane Hull reported on this year’s open weekend which will feature numerous attractions including Sport in the Park and village fete on July 6th, the annual ladies five-a-side football tournament and round the village funrun on July 7th and a host of other entertainments and art events including a craft display and photographic competition. Entry forms for the various events will be available via the village web site at www.hethersett.org.uk
Peter Steward reported on the Come and Try Sports Event being organised in conjunction with Active Norfolk on May 22nd from 6 to 9 p.m. Sports lined-up include archery, athletics, cycle speedway, football, cricket, rounders, petanque, handball, shuffleboard and cornboard.
Mel Perkins reported on improvements to the Memorial Field and gave an update on the proposed extension to the pavilion for which plans are being drawn up ahead of applying for planning permission. The “new pavilion” will make major improvements to the playing field.
Peter Steward reported on the South Norfolk Village Games which will be held at Framingham Earl on June 9th Hethersett will be going for a hat-trick of wins. Sports included this year will be archery, athletics, badminton, climbing wall, darts, fitness triathlon, five-a-side football, rounders, short mat bowls, table tennis and tennis.
Martin Anderton reported on a highly successful Hethersett 30/60 cycle event which had seen 500 riders taking part. The original date had to be moved due to the bad weather. Martin is now organising similar events in Southwold and King’s Lynn and looking to start up a Hethersett Cycling Club. He will also be leading cycle rides at Sport in the Park. Martin stated that he envisaged an even larger 30/60 event in 2014, possibly utilising a new venue.
Fiona Whiting reported on the latest initiatives within Hethersett schools aimed at improving sport and fitness and setting up a lasting Olympic legacy.
Hethersett Netball Club has organised a team for the Active Norfolk netball tournament at Dereham on April 28th.
Shane Hull reported on an exhibition at Norwich Forum which featured a number of artefacts from Hethersett’s Olympic year.
There had been little interest shown in corporate membership of Fitness Express at Park Farm, but it was agreed to discuss this at a future meeting.
Active Norfolk
Alex Bond reported on a number of initiatives involving Active Norfolk and a tie up with the national rounders body. The next Active Norfolk golf tournament will take place on September 15th. Alex promoted the Norfolk Corporate Games on June 14th.
Northern River Valleys Board
Nigel Bailey and David Bills reported that the grant money from the Board should be in the sports association account within the next few weeks. The distribution of funds will feature as a major item on the association’s next meeting.
Skateboard Park
Alison Utting has this in hand and will be reporting back to the next meeting of the association.
Campaigns Update
Peter Steward reported that great steps have been taken in the villages to encourage more participation in sport by girls and women. Many of the clubs and groups now had a majority of female participants and this seemed to be increasing, particularly in badminton, table tennis and running.
The coming grant will allow the association to follow one of its other aims – to support improved facilities. The association is also fully behind plans to improve and develop the pavilion on the Memorial Playing Field.
Marketing and Promotion
The chairman and secretary will look into a number of areas including team T shirts, banners, posters etc
Health Packs Update
At the close of the meeting numerous people stayed behind to put together the health and promotional folders given to the association by South Norfolk Council. These will be distributed throughout the summer.
Any Other Business
Steve Walker has two soon to be redundant goalposts at the Junior School which he would like to see used in the community – possibly on the land by the village hall and also on Steepletower. He will follow this up with Hethersett Parish Council and South Norfolk Council who own the respective pieces of land.
Wayne Johnson spoke about the need in the village for an all weather sports surface to provide a lasting legacy for future generations. This was supported strongly by association members and Wayne will look into the feasibility and report back to the next meeting.
Respect Yourself reported on their successes with their text messaging service for young people. The association will be supporting this financially from their grant money in order to send out dates and health information to youngsters
Maurice Durrant spoke about the possibility of organising a ladies rugby team at Crusaders and also reported on a coming cup final for the club.
Shane Hull reported that the London Olympic Park would be re-opening in the summer. The Copperbox venue would include a plaque recognising the contribution to the Olympic movement by Hethersett.
Peter Hoult promoted the coming quiz on June 15th to raise funds for the Open Weekend, Sport in the Park and village fete. This will be held in Hethersett Village Hall and teams of up to eight can book their places with Peter.
