Treasurer’s Report
Shane Hull circulated the latest accounts, showing a total income of £3,332 which includes the Northern River Valleys Neighbourhood Board grant of £3,140 and membership subscriptions of £192. Expenditure to date includes £50 for a raffle prize at the village open weekend, £400 to the Respect Yourself group, £199.65 to Hethersett Athletic Football Club to help start-up teams at Under-7 and Under-8 levels, £500 to start up Hethersett Croquet Club and £400 for a petanque terrain on the Memorial Field. The current balance is £1,782.35. The association also has £700 lodged with South Norfolk Council for publicity and marketing purposes.
The following clubs are fully paid up members of the association – Hethersett Athletic Football Club, Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club, Hethersett Queen’s Road Badminton Club, Hethersett Netball Club, Crusaders Rugby Club, Great Melton Cricket Club, Little Melton Parish Council, Respect Yourself, Hethersett Croquet Club and Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club.
New Clubs/Equipment Reports
Peter Steward reported that the running group has now stopped for the winter but will start up again in the Spring. A come and try day had been held for tennis and rounders at Hethersett Village Hall. These had gone well and the association is looking to launch clubs in both in the Spring, possibly in partnership with Hethersett High School. In addition a come and try tennis event will be arranged for the court at Little Melton.
Hethersett Velo Club continues to go from strength to strength with well over 100 members and club rides attracting 70 plus riders. The club is organising a charity family ride on October 5th and will also re-name itself Hethersett Yellow Club for the day in support of Wymondham Lemon Day when a 25 mile ride to and from Wymondham town centre will be organised.
Peter Hoult reported on the success of Hethersett Croquet Club which meets regularly on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field. Over 20 people have been turning up for sessions with eight able to play at any one time. It is eventually hoped to have facilities to have 16 people playing at once. The club will be taking a winter break with the aim of starting again in April.
Mark Heazle from South Norfolk Council explained the workings of a mobile gym and asked for the association’s support in launching the idea in Hethersett. The gym would take place on a weekly basis in a hall in the village with Active Norfolk and South Norfolk Council combining to deliver equipment and run sessions and foot the costs involved. The idea has been very successful in Loddon. After an initial period the gym would be organised and run by volunteers and a grant provided to supply equipment which would be stored locally. The group would then become self sufficient. Mel Perkins suggested the Jubilee Youth Club would be an ideal venue. Peter Steward agreed to contact Richard Bond from Park Farm to ensure the idea doesn’t conflict with the gym at Fitness Express. David Bills agreed to sound out the youth club. It was suggested that a come and try event could be held in the New Year.
Michelle Melton gave an update on Hethersett Netball Club’s successes and promotion for one of its teams which was unbeaten throughout the entire season. Jacqui Horsfield is continuing to take coaching badges and the association has set aside £400 for the development of a junior section.
Shane Hull reported on his work with Wayne Johnson to source land suitable for all weather sports facilities in Hethersett. A feasibility study has identified land at Hethersett Junior School and the idea has the backing of Head Teacher Andy Whittle and the governors. Discussion is needed with Norfolk County Council and Norwich Diocese and some legal hurdles need to be negotiated before grants can be applied for. The idea will need the backing of Hethersett Parish Council which would have to foot any legal fees. The complex could be used for a variety of sports including football, hockey, netball and volleyball and would include floodlighting in consultation with neighbouring residents. Shane suggested to succeed the venture would require a sub committee of the parish council to be set up to include members of the parish council, the sports association, sports clubs and other interested parties. The school would be given priority use during the day with outside organisations able to use on evenings and at weekends. Maurice Durrant stated that Crusaders Rugby Club would be interested in using the facilities for training. The association gave its full backing for the project.
Peter Hoult reported that a petanque terrain is now in place on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field and available for use by the public. Starting a club could be a possibility in the future. Mel Perkins suggested a set of boules could be purchased for come and try sports days and Open Weekend.
Peter Hoult reported that the Methodist Table Tennis Club has re-started after its summer break and is meeting every Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m.
Grant Applications
Wayne Johnson applied for £100 to start up an Under-6 football team for Hethersett Athletic Football Club to add to the Under-7s and Under-8s already started. Gary Wyatt proposed and David Bills seconded and it was passed unanimously.
Ron Butcher outlined plans to improve facilities at Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club and in particular extending the hut. They need £1,800 and will be applying for a number of grants. Gary Wyatt proposed the association award the bowls club £500 which would allow them to start the work in the near future. This was seconded by Mel Perkins and passed unanimously.
Maurice Durrant mentioned a wish list of equipment needed by Crusaders Rugby Club. Members agreed that the club should be supported and awarded £250 to purchase slalom poles, tag belts and cones to help with training the club’s youth members. This was proposed by Gary Wyatt and seconded by Harold Kerslake and passed unanimously.
The Success Story So Far and Coming and Past Events
Shane Hull reported on another successful village open weekend in July. This had included some new events such as a photographic competition held at the Woodcote Sheltered Housing complex. A village fete had joined the Sport in the Park event and the evening music event and barbecue had proved particularly popular and even been referred to as “a mini Blickling.” Run the Square had attracted over 200 runners/walkers. The 2014 event is likely to be held again in July. The Olympic Legacy Committee will be meeting in the near future to start the arrangements.
Peter Steward updated the meeting on the current spate of vandalism on the Memorial Field and steps being taken to counteract this including more police patrols, direct police action, shutting off the park lights at 9.30 p.m, removing the bottle banks, removing the bench near the pavilion and improving barrier security. The Trustees would also be applying for an alcohol consumption ban on the field. Mel Perkins updated the association on steps being taken to improve and extend the pavilion now that planning permission has been granted by South Norfolk Council. Builders are being contacted and grants sourced for the work. Maurice Durrant outlined vandalism problems affecting Crusaders Rugby Club.
Peter Steward reported on Hethersett and the Meltons performance in this year’s village games which saw us win the South Norfolk event for the third consecutive year and finish runners-up in the county finals for the third year running. Sadly the future of the games seems uncertain unless a sponsor is found for 2014.
David Bills has been in contact with Hethersett Hall which has offered its facilities for use by the association to provide entertainment for its residents. It was agreed that the Hall’s manager should be invited to attend the next sports association meeting.
Mel Perkins reported that the annual Community Fireworks event organised by Hethersett Athletic Football Club would not take part this year following a feasibility study and problems with stewarding the event. It is hoped to re-launch it as a community event in 2014 with a number of groups and organisations being asked to form an organising committee. Shane Hull agreed to put the matter on the agenda of the next Olympic Legacy Committee meeting.
Peter Steward detailed a request from Cllr Dale for the Association to have a presence at this year’s village Christmas Fair in Hethersett Methodist Church at the end of November. Gary Wyatt said that HaMSA could share a space with the Hethersett Environmental Action Team if needed.
Northern River Valleys Board
David Bills reported that the next meeting will be held at the Family Golf Centre, Easton, on November 11th. He also reported that Nigel Bailey will be leaving his post with South Norfolk Council at the end of October. A vote of thanks was given to Nigel for his tremendous help and support of both the sports association and Hethersett.
Campaigns Update
Peter Steward reported on success as far as starting new groups and improving facilities. He will undertake a study to ascertain the number of women and girls attracted to the new groups set-up by the association. HaMSA will continue to lobby for improved cycle paths and will continue to fight against vandalism in the villages.
Gary Wyatt reported that the Hethersett Environmental Action Team has applied to the Northern River Valleys Neighbourhood Board for funding to replace the out of date village maps situated around the village and also to produce a booklet of local walks. Members agreed that this project should have the full support of the sports association.
Hethersett Velo Club is applying for a grant for a new electronic timer for events, again supported by the sports association.
Marketing and Promotion
It was suggested that plaques should be purchased to be placed on areas of sport and buildings that the association has helped through grant funding. It was also agreed to produce leaflets and publicity material for the Spring.
Any Other Business
Mel Perkins outlined his idea for a Superstars Sports Challenge running from April to October and featuring local companies and village teams of eight, taking part in a large variety of sports. Each team would include two females, two under-18s, two over-40s and competitions in various sports would be on a four a side basis. The association gave the idea its full backing and Mel will look into taking it forward.
