Round Table Introductions
There were 13 present including a number representing the new skateboard group.

Treasurer’s Report
Shane Hull (SH) produced the latest accounts showing a surplus of £1,407.35. This includes £60 allocated for maintenance of the race clock. The remainder is made up of grants, donations and subscriptions. An additional £250 is expected from Active Norfolk to help finance the coming come and try sports event.
Hethersett Open Weekend 2015
SH and Peter Steward (PS) gave an update on this year’s open weekend which will include a come and try sports event on the Memorial Playing Field on July 4th and the two mile fun run on the 5th. There will also be an inter-denominational church service in Hethersett Social Club on July 5th before the funrun. The honorary starter for the funrun will be Matthew Parslow-Williams, Head Teacher of Hethersett Junior School. The funrun is being sponsored by Drayton Insurance Services and entry forms are on the village web site and will also be available from Hethersett Library. Entry is £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. There was a discussion about possibly widening entries in the future to include skateboarders.
Applications for Grants
One application had been received and it was agreed that 50% funding should be given to Hethersett Athletic Football Club towards the cost of the Under-12s taking part in a Futsal League. A grant from the sports association of £62.50 was awarded. This was proposed by Mel Perkins and seconded by David Bills.
Sports Clubs/Groups Updates and Coming Events
Hethersett Olympic Legacy Sports Complex (HOLSC)
SH updated the meeting on the proposed Multi Use Games Arena on land at Hethersett Academy. Two groups have been formed to plan and implement a two stage development which will eventually include a sports hall facility. The complex will be used by the school during the day and by the community in evenings, at weekends and during school holidays. A formal legal entity is being set-up to manage the scheme and a funding bid document is being put together.
Hethersett Velo Club
The annual 30/60/90 proved another big success with over 450 riders taking part. Club nights are also attracting large turnouts.
Hethersett Croquet Club
This is progressing well and meets on Wednesday and Saturdays on the Memorial Playing Field.
Hethersett Netball Club
Helen Lawn (HL) sent in a written report stating that the adults are well into their summer season and awaiting the delivery of new kit. The team won the Active Norfolk county tournament at Dereham after coming close on a number of occasions in the past. The club has been working in conjunction with the junior school and running a weekly after school club. A team from the junior school has been entered into the school partnership mini league.
Skateboard Facilities
There was a long discussion on improving and renovating the existing skateboard facilities. A group of young people attended the meeting and spoke in favour of obtaining grants for a self-help community project aimed at making the existing equipment safe and also improving the facilities. The group has gained over 250 signatures on a petition to keep the park open. It is hoped to put together a group consisting of skateboarders, supporters and parents to help improve the area with the aim of making it available for this and future generations of skateboard enthusiasts. The group has the support of the sports association and will continue to put together plans and costings with the matter referred to Hethersett Parish Council.
Hethersett Queen’s Road Badminton Club
Peter Hoult (PH) reported on the continued growth and success of the club which is hoping to obtain Premier Sports status by September.
Hethersett Running Group
Coach Paul Evans will be starting a six week course for all abilities on the Memorial Field from May 28th, leading up to the annual two mile funrun in July. SH will be putting up posters around the village and the course will also be advertised through web sites and social media,
Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club
The bowls club has attracted a number of new members over the past few months.
Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club
MP reported that the new season has started and Hethersett are currently top of the South East League Division One. The club will be attending the Junior School fete on May 16th and will also be taking part in the Lord Mayor’s procession and the Gas Hill Gasp event in Norwich. The club is also undertaking a promotion push to attract new riders.
Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Trust
PH and MP reported on the Memorial Playing Field including the installation of a basketball hoop and football kick wall. NORSE continues to do an excellent job in making the field look good. Quotes are being gathered from builders for work on extending and modernising the pavilion – something that will cost about £400,000. Work will take place to level the gully that exists towards the Woodcote end of the field. New round goalposts will replace the current square ones and the second pitch will be turned into adult size with the current pitch at Little Melton being used for youth football. The Trust is looking to have temporary chains in place while negotiations take place for a permanent gate to the field. PH will liaise with Tim Hudson-Church who has access to some chains. There are currently vacancies on the board of trustees.
Junior Park Run
SH reported on the continued success of the Norwich Eaton Park run which is being monitored by Active Norfolk before a decision takes place on whether to extend the idea to other parts of the county.
Norfolk Village Games 2015
PS reported on a change of set-up for the 2015 games with no area competitions but a county final which will take place on July 12th at the UEA Sportspark. PS will be sending out e-mails to help raise teams in the 10 sports/events involved.
Hethersett Hall/Dementia Group
David Bills reported on the coming launch of the Dementia Friendly Group and the Hethersett Hub Dementia café which will meet for the first time at Hethersett Hall on Tuesday 19th May
Heart of Hethersett Bereavement Group
This will be organised once the Dementia group is underway.
Hethersett Athletic Football Club
MP reported that the club’s season is virtually complete with just one fixture outstanding. The club’s charter standard mark has been renewed. The coming season will see an additional Saturday Men’s team added with the club taking in the former Marlborough Old Boys team – most of whom live in the village. Marlborough have been using the Hethersett facilities this season. From next season they will be known as Hethersett Athletic Old Boys.
Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club
PS reported on a very successful charity match between Hethersett and a Norfolk Select XI which had raised over £1200 for the Wymondham based Star Throwers charity. The club’s league season is underway with the firsts and seconds both unbeaten in their respective leagues. The club is running a veterans’ league side for the first time.
Great Melton Cricket Club
The senior and junior league seasons are underway and full details are on the club’s web
Hethersett Methodist Table Tennis Club
PH reported on the continued success, although numbers taking part fluctuate. A meeting will be held in the near future to discuss the future of the club and its structure.
Respect Yourself
Bobby Dowling (BD) updated members on Respect Yourself which has now gained charity status. The charity will help the Skateboard group. BD reported on the massive amount of work put into the charity and how it continues to grow.
Hethersett Environmental Action Team
Gary Wyatt reminded members of the Open Garden scheme in Hethersett on June 28th
Possible New Clubs
PS spoke about reports of vandalism on the tennis court at the village hall. This has been reported to the parish council. The worst case scenario would see the court locked and unavailable to the public – something that would be regrettable. He was still keen to start a properly constituted tennis club in the village.
South Norfolk Council
David Bills was congratulated on being re-elected to South Norfolk Council. Each council member is likely to be given £1,000 for distribution to his/her local community. There would also be £20,000 assigned to the local area for grants.
2015 Tour of Britain Cycle Race
This will come past the village on Saturday 12th September around midday. It will give the village the opportunity to turn out in force. The suggestion is for a small group to be put together consisting of parish councillors and members of the sports association with a view to co-ordinating support for the race. The group will be led by representative of the villages’ two cycle clubs – Hethersett Velo and Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway.
Marketing of the Association
PS stated that there are plans for a series of books with a sporting theme to be written/published in 2016. Shane Hull is working on a publication on the Olympic Legacy, Mel Perkins is preparing a publication to mark the 50th anniversary of Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway, Peter Steward is writing a history of Hethersett Athletic Football Club to mark its 25th anniversary. There are also plans to write an updated history of Hethersett Cricket Club (now Hethersett and Tas Valley).
