Minutes of meeting of Hethersett and Meltons’ Sports Association held at Park Farm Hotel, Hethersett, February 27th, 2012

Round Table Introductions
There were 15 present – Peter Steward (chair), Shane Hull (treasurer), Mel Perkins, Fiona Whiting, Martin Anderton, Peter Hoult, Gary Wyatt, Michelle Melton, Helen Lawn, Janice House, Alex Bond, Katie Coss, Colin McDermott, Paul Evans, Nigel Bailey. All introduced themselves individually.
Minutes of Previous Meeting
These had been circulated and were taken as read.
Treasurer’s Report
Shane reported that the bank account currently contains £125. He reported that annual subscriptions would be due at the next meeting. These are £5 for clubs and £2 for individuals.
Appointment of New Secretary
Peter Hoult continued to take minutes of the meeting in the absence of a secretary.
Presentation by Paul Evans
Active Norfolk Project Officer Paul outlined his plans to enable HAMSA to facilitate the operation of a new running group in the area. It was decided that the first meeting would be on Thursday April 19th subject to availability with Fiona Whiting to contact Hethersett High School to inquire about the use of their outdoor facilities. The aim would be to run the group from 7 until 8 p.m. Aimed at running beginners, the group would be coached in correct footwear, warming up exercises and running technique. The sessions will run initially for 6 weeks and the situation will then be monitored and adjusted to cover further sessions if the need is there. The possibility of starting groups at various times to facilitate all was also discussed. This could include a weekend group, an after work group and an early morning group. Paul Evans explained that the group was part of Run England’s efforts to sign up 1200 new runners in Norfolk and Suffolk and funds are available for marketing etc. The minimum age would be 16 although youngsters aged between 14 and 16 can take part if accompanied by an adult.
Hethersett and the Meltons – The Success Story Update and coming events
. Shane reported on the upcoming Hethersett Open Weekend – covering Sport in the Park, Run the Square, ladies 5 a side soccer in particular. This will take place from June 22nd to 24th
· Shane outlined the plans for the visit of the Olympic Flame to the High School on July 5th
· Mel reported on the international speedway tournament against Poland on 31st July – probably the finest riders in the world. There will also be a major junior (12 – 18 year olds) competition at the end of July.
· Pledge to fitness 2012. Fiona gave details of the successful Pledge day on 25th January – 133 pledges on the day and still operational on www.pledge2012.com
· Come and Try Sports Event on Wednesday 30th May. Peter S outlined the sports that will be available on the Memorial Playing Field from 6 to 9 p.m. Active Norfolk have confirmed archery and other sports will include athletics, cricket, football, bowls, netball and possibly petanque.
· Hethersett Open spaces. Mel explained the plans for the upcoming workshops on 4th and 25th March at Woodcote. The Glass house Project will help local people to decide on ways of improving Hethersett’s open spaces, starting with the Memorial Playing Field
· HMPFT. Peter H outlined the recent improvements made to the play equipment, possible improvement of facilities in the pavilion and laid out the plans for the upcoming Traditional Jubilee Fayre on the field on Sunday June 3rd
· South Norfolk village Games 2012. Peter S confirmed the villages’ participation in the games and will e-mail out details of the sports involved. The event will be held at Framingham Earl Sports Centre on June 10th
· Hethersett 30/60 Cycle Event due to be held on Sunday 18th March Martin explained that the event was fully subscribed within six weeks of setting up. A total of 300 riders will depart from the social club and cover 30 or 60 miles, returning to the social club for food and refreshments
· Mel reported on public events held by Hethersett Athletic Football Club and confirmed a date of 9th June for the youth teams’ funday and presentations.
· Peter S stated that the association should use this year’s Olympic celebrations as a catylist to make 2013 the year of support for improved facilities in the village and also a year to encourage local people to walk, cycle and improve their fitness rather than relying on cars.
· Sports Physiotherapist Colin McDermott introduced himself and outlined his wishes to treat sports injuries within the various clubs
Discussion on Existing Facilities and Wish List for the Future
Janice and Helen outlined the need to find suitable netball court facilities in Hethersett. They run two teams, Hurricanes and Tornados and currently are having to use facilities at UEA. Shane and Gary will look into adapting the soon-to-be-refurbished court behind the village hall for the future inclusion of netball use. In the meantime Fiona and Peter S will look into the possibility of the club using facilities at Hethersett High School and this will have the backing of the sports association.
Nigel Bailey explained the availability of grants of up to £170,000 for the Hethersett area. The public will need to vote for parts of the South Norfolk spending allocation – be it sport, youth, enhanced services etc.
Shane pointed out that there would be a charity token donation box on behalf of the Olympic committee at Waitrose Wymondham, following on from the one at Waitrose Eaton. Any donations from these sources would go towards providing Hethersett’s youngsters with a commemorative coin.
Attracting New Members
It was disappointing to see a lack of school representatives again and Peter S will mount a recruitment drive before the next association meeting.
Any Other Business ·
Thanks were expressed to Richard Bond and Park Farm for the use of their facilities.
· Nigel Bailey offered the facility of leaflet folders – about 1000 or so, which the group may use to insert flyers for upcoming events and sports club information in general. It was thought that any material would need to be ready for early May inclusion. Peter S will contact everyone by e-mail and seek out leaflets which can be inserted at the association’s next meeting and given out at future events. Leaflets to include details of clubs, health and well being tips etc.
· Shane outlined plans for 205 Hethersett children to take part in a mock Olympic opening ceremony in the main arena at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show on 27th/28th June. This event would also feature the unique Hethersett Torch which is being made to a design from pupils at Hethersett High School.
