Round Table Introductions

Matters Arising
None
Treasurer’s Report
SH provided an update on finances with £2,256 currently in Lloyd’s Bank. This includes £500 ring fenced for the new inflatable arch and £470.90 for Run the Square.
Pavilion on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field
There was a lengthy discussion regarding the upgrading and proposed improvements to the pavilion on the Memorial Playing Field. Members agreed that any pavilion should be for multi-purpose community use and not just for sports groups/clubs. The pavilion has the ability to become a focal point for the village. Planning permission has been extended, although grant applications to date haven’t been successful. It was agreed that work is needed on illustrating the positive impact that a pavilion would have on the community. It was underlined that the current pavilion isn’t fit for purpose and is an “embarrassment to the village.”
Suggestions for use of a new building included a daily café, use as a community room for meetings etc. It was agreed that HAMSA should contact Hethersett Parish Council to underline the importance of upgrading the current facilities. To this end WJ and RA will attend the next parish council meeting to represent HAMSA. PS and SH, as parish councillors, will have to declare an interest with regards to any future discussions on this matter.
Run the Square 2016
SH reported that 204 runners completed this year’s event with 90% coming from the village. Planning has started for the 2017 funrun with a provisional date of July 16th (date subject to various agreements)
Applications for Grants
Hethersett Athletic Football Club applied for a £100 grant to help set-up a new group for school years one and two. WJ reported on a training session for under-6s which had attracted 15 youngsters. The sports association grant will go to providing a new kit and other equipment. On a proposal by PH, seconded by HL, the grant was unanimously agreed. DB also offered a similar grant from South Norfolk Council.
Sports Clubs/Groups Updates and Coming Events
Hethersett Olympic Legacy Sports Complex (HOLSC)
DB reported progress being made between Hethersett Academy and South Norfolk Council over the proposed running of the new facilities. A six figure funding grant has been applied for. WJ stated that phase one of the development would see the lettings for the gym, sports hall and outdoor hard areas being taken on by South Norfolk Council and this could take place before the end of the year. DB said that HAMSA will be represented in any plans/negotiations. PH said that the weekly fees paid by Hethersett Badminton Club have already increased.
Hethersett Velo Club
There was no representation from the club.
Hethersett Croquet Club
PH reported that the season is over and the club enjoyed a “steady year”. A storage unit has been put in place at the bottom end of the field after approval from the Memorial Playing Field Trustees.
Hethersett Netball Club
HL reported on more success for the junior section with a number of new members and youngsters travelling from Attleborough and Dereham. The adults have started their winter league indoor programme. There is a possibility of starting a new section for five to eight year olds.
Hethersett Badminton Club
PH reported on the continued success of the club with 56 youngsters and 30 regular adult players. The club has seven qualified coaches and is entering younger members in tournaments.
Hethersett Running Group
The group has finished for the winter but PS will be in contact with Paul Evans with regards to a new six week course leading up to next year’s village funrun.
Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Bowls Club
The club was not represented.
Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club
MP reported that the club is reaching the end of its golden jubilee season. There is a very good team spirit under a new senior team manager. The first team is likely to finish in mid table in the South East League, but the B team has finished runners-up. There has been a welcome influx of youngsters for Tuesday club nights with up to 40 riders involved this year. One of the club members has taken coaching badges with British Cycling. The club holds a national Go Ride status and will be looking to achieve Clubmark status next year.
Hethersett Memorial Playing Field Trust
MP reported on vacancies on the trustees’ body which at present numbers five and is two below strength. In addition PH has indicated a wish to retire in May.
The matting on the kick wall has been extended and a piece of playground equipment has been taken away for repair. The trustees are looking to put in more fencing. HL pointed out that the matting in the children’s play area has become slippery. The trustees will look into this.
Norfolk Village Games
HL is waiting to hear whether the Active Norfolk netball tournament will be held again in 2017. Hethersett are the current champions. PS stated that Hethersett will be honoured at a special presentation event to mark 10 years of the Active Norfolk/Radio Norfolk/EDP sports awards. Hethersett was named champion of champions in 2011 and will be honoured along with all the other champion of champions. Hethersett has also been nominated for the sports village of the year section once again and we are waiting to hear whether we have been shortlisted.
Hethersett Dementia Group
DB stated that the group continues to grow and provide a valuable service. A special event is being held on November 9th in the Village Hall to provide information for local people and businesses.
Hethersett Bereavement Group
This has been launched at Woodcote Sheltered Housing complex and the first evening was attended by 10 people. It is likely to become a fortnightly event. PS explained the inclusion of both the dementia group and bereavement group on the agenda as these fall into the area of well being.
Hethersett Village Screen
This launched with a showing of the film Eddie The Eagle and proved a successful venture with over 30 people attending. Three other films have been lined-up including West Side Story and Absolutely Fabulous – The Movie.
Hethersett Jubilee Youth Club
LD gave his apologies but sent an e-mail regarding numbers increasing since the appointment of a new youth leader. A quiz and chips evening proved successful with money raised towards the replacement guttering. A new projector and screen is in place and working well.
Park Farm Fitness Express
MS reported on healthy membership numbers. Advertising space on noticeboards is available free of charge for sports clubs under the sports association banner. Also sports association members can obtain a 15% discount in membership.
Hethersett Athletic Football Club
WJ reported on the start of the 2016/2017 season with a number of different venues being used. The club is in a healthy position with 12 teams.
Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club
PS reported on a successful season that had seen the club win the inaugural Mid Norfolk Sunday League Challenge Cup. It had raised over £600 for Star Throwers Cancer Charity from a match won by a Tony Selby Norfolk Select XI. This was in memory of Les King. A fireworks evening and presentations events will take place over the next few months.
Great Melton Cricket Club
WJ reported on a successful junior festival and Bank Holiday six-a-side tournament. Sadly the picturesque Oak tree, which has formed part of the ground for many decades, has died.
Crusaders Rugby Club
Nobody was present from Crusaders.
Hethersett Methodist Table Tennis Club
PH said the club has limited numbers but continues to pay its way.
Respect Yourself
BW gave a comprehensive report on the charity which is now working with 30 national charities and police forces throughout the country. The web site is experiencing 20,000 visits each month. Apps are being updated and the charity is also working with groups fighting child sexual exploitation and child sexual abuse. It is also helping refugees to integrate with local young people and working to lower the instances of gun, gang and knife crime. The charity worked closely with a Hethersett GP to help a South African suffering from bi-polar disorder.
Hethersett Environmental Matters

Rowan House
RP said that Rowan House has celebrated its first birthday and now has nine treatment rooms. The centre continues to grow, bringing people into Hethersett. The centre is looking at ways to make itself better known in the local community and is looking to contact the local surgery to obtain its support. An open evening is being held on November 3rd and Rowan House is looking at the whole question of stress in the workplace.
New Clubs
Nothing has been heard from the resident interested in starting up a short tennis club.
Proposed Fireworks Event
Crusaders have been in touch with PS re Hethersett Athletic’s involvement in their fireworks event in November. PS has passed details onto the football club’s events co-ordinator.
South Norfolk Council
DB stated that he still has money available for local causes.
Marketing and Promotion of the Association
PS produces a monthly e-magazine for the village and this regularly features various sports clubs.
Any Other Business
PH suggested a sport in the park/come and try event should be organised for 2017, possibly in the grounds of Hethersett Academy. HL mentioned the success of an evening music event held a few years ago. It was agreed to place the idea on the agenda of the next meeting.
Date of Next Meeting
This will be the annual meeting and has been set for Monday 23rd January, 2017, at 7.30 p.m at Park Farm Hotel (subject to confirmation).
